Wildhorse Mine in Saguaro National Park, and 400-Yard Mine, seven miles south of BLM land, house the two largest colonies of cave myotis (Myotis velifer) in the Tucson Mountains. We began monitoring Wildhorse Mine (WHM) in 1999, and 400-Yard Mine in 2004. Both colonies are bachelor colonies, present spring through fall. Conducting simultaneous counts at both mines gives a more complete picture of the total population of this species in the area, and an opportunity to compare seasonal trends at these two mines. In 2005, we began monitoring human visitation in both mines to asses the degree of disturbance to bats.
