This annotated bibliography includes short summaries of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications related to climate change in Arctic and Subarctic northern Alaska and is intended to provide managers of parks in Arctic and Subarctic settings with information needed to focus and prioritize resource inventory and treatment efforts. Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve is the focus of this literature survey. The park contains significant archaeological resources that are threatened by processes influenced by a changing global climate. At 8.5 million acres and situated at a geographic crossroads—spanning Arctic and Subarctic, tundra and forest zones, and mountain and riverine environments—Gates of the Arctic is a useful case study for examining not only human adaptations and human-environment interactions over many millennia, but also recent change that affects preservation of the archaeological record. The most important natural and geomorphic processes relevant to archaeological resource management include changes to lakes, mass movements, soil temperature, aeolian sediment deposition, glaciers and snowfields, wildfire, vegetation, human activities, and rivers. A summary table describes both benefits and threats posed to archaeological resources by climate-related processes.
