Evaluation of BioBlitz 2015: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

In May 2015, the national BioBlitz was held in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Among the goals were: 1) to collect data on the diversity of species in the Park; 2) help scientists understand the benefits of communicating about science to the public; 3) help the general public (including students) appreciate and feel comfortable in nature, learn about biodiversity, and explore the world using all of their senses. The evaluation showed that students, teachers, and the general public generally found BioBlitz to be fun and inspiring with most having a greater appreciation for, and comfort in, nature than they did before participating in BioBlitz. Future BioBlitz events could be improved by allowing more time for exploration and participation in activities by having a less packed and confusing schedule, as well as better communication, and improved transportation logistics.
