Although most tortoises in the Sonoran Desert inhabit areas below 4000 ft (1220 m) in elevation, tortoises have been observed well above this elevation at SNP. A known population of tortoises occurs between 4600-4900 ft (1400-1500 m) along the Chimenea drainage on the south side of the Rincon Mountains, and in 2000, a single tortoise was observed near the top of the Rincon Mountains in coniferous forest at 7808 ft, an elevation record for the species.
