The Louisiana coastline is retreating due primarily to subsidence. Implications for this area may prove to be significant for the world in general if a global rise in sea level occurs as a result of global warming. Many habitat changes result from the retreat of land, including loss of freshwater marshes, increase in salinity, the killing of native vegetation, and eventually the emergence of new open bodies of water. The Mississippi River delta is experiencing an ever accelerating rate of wetland loss during this century. History and causation of this phenomenon are examined.
