MMIs were developed using data from the 2011 EPA National Wetland Condition Assessment. MMIs can be calculated for freshwater wetlands in Upper MidWest and Northern Appalachian Level IV Ecoregions (Omernick 1988). MMIs are only appropriate for freshwater wetlands that have groundwater or precipitation as the primary water inputs and are on non-calcareous bedrock or sediment.
