The Geologic Resources Inventory (GRI) is one of 12 inventories funded by the National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring Program. The Geologic Resources Division of the NPS Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate administers the GRI. This report synthesizes discussions from a scoping meeting for Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (California) in 2008 and a follow-up conference call in 2015, which were held by the NPS Geologic Resources Division to identify geologic resources of significance and geologic resource management issues, as well as determine the status of geologic mapping. It is a companion document to the GRI GIS data. This GRI report was written for resource managers at the park to support science-informed decision making. It may also be useful for interpretation. This report addresses a fundamental resource and value—science-informed stewardship/learning laboratory—in which science guides park management, informs policy, and lays the groundwork for educating visitors and fostering stewardship (National Park Service 2015a). Sections of the report discuss distinctive geologic features and processes, highlight geologic issues facing resource managers, describe the geologic history leading to the present-day landscape, and provide information about the GRI GIS data that accompany this report. This report was prepared using available geologic information. No new fieldwork was conducted in association with its preparation. Mapping by the California Geological Survey (Wills et al. 2012; Campbell et al. 2014) served as the sources for the GRI GIS data that accompany this report. A poster (in pocket) illustrates these data. The GRI GIS data cover the area of the park and much of the densely populated urban and suburban areas of the southern California megalopolis. The GRI GIS data also contain mapping from a landslide inventory by Irvine and McCrink (2012).
