The FAA, with assistance of the Volpe Center’s Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division, and the NPS conducted baseline ambient sound level measurements during September 2003 – approximately two weeks of acoustical and meteorological data were measured at three sites in the park. These sites were selected during multiple discussions between the FAA, the NPS, the Volpe Center, and Badlands NPS personnel. The primary goal of the site selection process was to identify the minimum number of field-measurement sites, which would allow for characterization of the baseline ambient sound levels throughout the entire park. This was accomplished by identifying acoustically representative regions for which data could be collected and stratified, i.e., “acoustic zones.” These data could then be applied to other regions in the park possessing similar attributes, which will affect acoustics, such as land cover, wind conditions, and wildlife habitats
