The FAA, with assistance of the Volpe Center’s Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division, and the NPS conducted baseline ambient sound level measurements during September 2003 – seven to ten days of acoustical and meteorological data were measured at two sites at Mount Rushmore. These sites were selected during multiple discussions between the FAA, the NPS, the Volpe Center, and Mount Rushmore NPS personnel. The primary goal of the site selection process was to identify the minimum number of field-measurement sites, which would allow for characterization of the baseline ambient sound levels throughout the entire memorial. This report details the results of these measurements.
