Field data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
2000-2011. Field data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
This reference is an assemblage of field data collected as part the baseline vegetation inventory for the park unit. Typical files here are vegetation plot data, accuracy assessment data, field photos, PDF showing locations of vegetation plots and accuracy assessment data, and other data for this type. Ecologists from NatureServe established eleven permanently marked one-hectare circular plots throughout the park in a grid system and another four in unique ecological areas that were missed by the grid. These plots are available to be used by researchers on studies ranging from bird point counts to individual plant monitoring to herpetological inventories. Ecologists collected data on all unique vegetation communities within the park and found at least fourteen vegetation associations (unique ecological assemblages of plants) within park boundaries. During the species inventory work, we encountered and collected 170 specimens (Table 2) of over 135 species that had not been confirmed previously from the park (more than this number if you include varieties of species). Over 55 of these species and varieties of species were county records, having not been previously documented for Henderson County, North Carolina. We created 170 vouchers for the herbarium at Carl Sandburg Home NHS (Table 3) from the plants we collected and photographed in the park.
