Field data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

2006-2008. Field data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

This reference is an assemblage of field data collected as part the baseline vegetation inventory for the park unit. Typical files here are vegetation plot data, accuracy assessment data, field photos, PDF showing locations of vegetation plots and accuracy assessment data, and other data for this type. The team collected 158 vegetation sampling plots within the PIRO project extent. Furthermore, data from 837 accuracy assessment (AA) sites were collected (of which 813 were used to test accuracy of the vegetation map layer). These data sets led to the identification of 56 vegetation associations in the NVCS at the PIRO. Additional vegetation types are recognized at the alliance and group levels of the NVCS. We performed our field reconnaissance throughout the summer of 2007. An additional eight plant communities were defined, with definitions further supported by data from the accuracy assessment (AA) collected in the field in 2008. We developed 74 map classes (including map-class phases) to map the PIRO and environs. Of these 74 map classes, 68 represent natural/semi-natural vegetation types within the NVCS, two represent cultural vegetation types (agriculture and developed) within the NVCS, and four represent non-vegetated units (open water, barren land).
