Field data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Wind Cave National Park

1997-1998. Field data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Wind Cave National Park

This reference is an assemblage of field data collected as part the baseline vegetation inventory for the park unit. Typical files here are vegetation plot data, accuracy assessment data, field photos, PDF showing locations of vegetation plots and accuracy assessment data, and other data for this type. Field surveys began in the first week of July 1997 after aerial photography was acquired. The first step was reconnaissance using observation points, which allowed investigators to visit many areas. Data from 134 observation points were collected from the beginning of field survey through the second week of September 1997. Points were recorded mainly within gradsects, and were chosen to sample the range of habitat and vegetation variability observed on aerial photography, on preliminary maps, and in the field. Data were collected on 65 plots during the 1997 field season extending into early September and four additional plots were sampled in 1998. Three plots were sampled for each plant community found in the study area, as long as three stands were available. For several uncommon plant communities, only one or two plots were sampled. All sampled data were eventually entered into TNC's "PLOTS" database program.
