An evaluation of the available biological, hydrologic, geomorphic and water chemistry data collected in Agate Fossil Beds National Monument (AGFO) in an attempt to find the cause for the almost complete extirpation of the native fish community in the Niobrara River within the park. While the introduction of non-native pike has been suggested as the cause, a suite of stressors may individually or cumulatively be responsible, though their relative contribution, if any, is uncertain. Without a clear explanation for the loss of the fish community, it is not possible to suggest the appropriate restoration strategy. Productive avenues of research are suggested.
