A population of desert tortoises in southern Joshua Tree National Park was studied to establish a desert tortoise monitoring program in support of the goals of the Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan and Natural Community Conservation Plan. Surveys were performed to locate tortoises, tortoise burrows, and tortoise remains. All tortoises located were marked and registered. A subset of tortoises was outfitted with radios for subsequent location throughout the study.
