During the summers of 2009 and 2010, archaeological investigations were carried out at the “Slaven’s Dome Cabin” site (CHR-00117/YUCH0023). The purpose of the project was to investigate the history of three indigenous Han Athapaskan families and how their way of life was affected or altered by living within the immediate influence of the placer gold dredging industry on Coal Creek in the 1940s and 1950s. The project also had an educational component designed to immerse young, high school aged scholars in the nature and practice of historical archaeology through collaboration with the University of Alaska, College of Natural Science and Mathematics’ Alaska Summer Research Academy.
