The Nauset Light Area is part of Cape Cod National Seashore, a unit of the National Park Service that comprises over 43,000 acres of protected shoreline, salt marshes, freshwater kettle ponds, lighthouses, a life-saving station, dune shacks, and Cape Cod-style houses. The 16.6-acre property is located within Barnstable County in the Town of Eastham, Massachusetts, on the eastern shore of the Lower Cape. Its rich and unique history is represented by a trio of 1838 lighthouses known as the Three Sisters of Nauset, the 1879 Nauset Beach Light, an 1875 keeper’s house and 1892 oil house, and the 1891 French Cable Hut, the last remnant of the French Cable Company’s transatlantic cable station . Contemporary infrastructure provides visitor access to the historic resources and Nauset Light Beach, one of the park’s most popular swimming destinations, and includes a large paved parking lot, bathhouse, pedestrian trails, and boardwalks. The property’s historic and non-historic features are intimately connected to the sandy bluff at Nauset, which continues to erode westward from beach erosion and storm events.
