Survey of cellular slime molds of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Landolt J. 2016. Survey of cellular slime molds of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Approximately 30 species of cellular slime molds have been detected in the park across about two dozen sites. Ten species were determined to be new to science and have been described in a publication. Groups of species appear to assort themselves by elevation and/or soil pH, which has also been described in a publication. This group of organisms provides an important intermediary in the food web between bacteria, on which they feed, and beetles and other more complex organisms, which feed on the slime molds.
