"This study has two unrelated aims: identify the genes responsible for tardigrades' (waterbears') extreme stress tolerance and develop an evolutionary history of global pseudoscorpion diversity. For the former, the PIs collected specimens of different tardigrade species to look for variation between species of molecular mechanisms governing cryptobiosis. The work should also contribute to phylogeny of the group. Pseudoscorpions were collected representing three families (Chthoniidae, Neobisiidae, and Syarinidae) and four genera (Chthoniidae: Tyrannochthonius; Neobisiidae: Microcreagris; Neobisiidae: Microbisium; and Syarinidae: Chitrella). Moss samples were collected from 15 sites and sampled in the lab for tardigrades. Four tardigrade families were collected (Macrobiotidae, Milnesidae, Echiniscidae, and Hypsibiidae) and a possible new species of Isohypsibius is being worked up. Specimens will be processed so that their genetic composition will be part of the larger projects."
