This study leads up the beetle work under the ATBI. As of 2010, the official end of the project, 2,518 species of beetle currently have been documented, approximately 39 are undescribed (new) species. At least 100 new species records were made each year between 2001 and 2008. A 2-week "Beetle Megablitz" was held in June, 2005. They also surveyed for synchronous firefly populations and provided some insight on how increased visitation at Elkmont might effect the population. As many populations were found elsewhere in the park, the overall park population does not seem to be endangered. Taxonomists continue to work up material collected. Species web pages are being written and posted on the ATBI web pages and the species list, new species and other information was incorporated and updated on the "Smoky Beetle" Website: (http://entomology.lsu.edu/lsam/smokybeetles.htm)--119 pages complete through 2008. Educational events have been held, especially teacher trainings.
