Research developed baseline for the microfungi communities found on the bark and in the leaf litter under beech, fir, and hemlocks. Over 94 species of fungi were identified, 54+ representing new park record species. Overall, a total of 30 genera were identified from all American beech bark samples, 24 for Fraser fir, and 25 for eastern hemlock. Research did not detect a significant difference in frequency of detection of fungi between the three tree species. Increased species richness at the higher positions on the trunk was likely related to changes in microenvironment. Species richness on bark was also highest in September. PI is working with data managers to enter data into ATBI database and is seeking funding to complete DNA sequencing. PI started using the next generation of DNA barcoding in 2014, but had difficulties with the process and is having to re-do all barcoding in early 2015.
