Algae of the Great Smoky Mountains

PIs have documented over 382 algal species new to the park for a park-wide total of over 1000 taxa. Unique habitats studied included wetwalls, seeps, and soils. Taxa from all the freshwater algal divisions have now been identified. A species of brown algae (Phaeophyta), a group normally thought of as large species like kelp and rockweeds, was found on stones in Abrams Creek. Many species new to science have been documented within the park and work is being done to describe such species. Diatoms of low-gradient streams were usually absent from high-gradient habitats.
