"A baseline inventory of the EPTO species in the 18 parks of the Appalachian Highlands and Cumberland/Piedmont networks will be conducted over a three year period. Because of the ongoing ATBI in GRSM, little sampling will be conducted there. Surveys will be conducted in all seasons of the year, and in all suitable habitats in each park. Sampling will be by light trap, Malaise trap, and by sweeping and hand collecting. Comprehensive lists of the EPTO species in each park; photographs, illustrations, and descriptions of each species will be served on park web pages. In order to assess the potential of each park, including GRSM, as a reserve for aquatic insect species, distribution data will be analyzed spatially using landscape parameters in a GIS -- a modified GAP analysis directed at evaluating the significance of existing reserves. Related work was picked up in 2011, but that year most of the findings derived from organisms found in a jelly fungus, Tremella reticulata. Examination of this fungus yielded specimens of fly larvae from at least four families; a snail, Hawaiia minuscula, generally found in degraded, habitats, but also generally uncommon in the park; segmented worms of the family Enchytraeidae; bacteria-eating nematodes; numerous protozoans, most unidentified except one identified as Colpidium colpoda (new park record)."
