"ATBI collaborator Paul Hebert at University of Guelph has barcoded about 1000 park species of moths and butterflies as of 2005. The Lepidoptera Twig collected replicate samples for bar-coding of around 400 lepidopteran species collected in May 2005; specimens of about 200 of these species have also been cryopreserved. As of 2006, the specimen record database for Lepidoptera from Great Smoky Mountains National Park contains over 22,000 individual records totaling more than 1600 species. Our best statistical estimators project that the total number of species in the Park is between 2000 and 2300. After all specimens from 2006 are processed we expect our recorded total number of species to be between 1750 and 1800, an increase of about 1000 over pre-ATBI surveys. Representatives of several hundred species were cryopreserved at the American Museum of Natural History for possible future DNA work. See also Studies #GRSM-00094 and GRSM-00339."
