No viruses were found in 53 samples of 8 species of fern. Two apple viruses were identified, as well as two clover viruses, three viruses for blackberries (Rubus sp.), at least three undescribed species of grape viruses (which actually may be viruses of a fungus infecting the grape), and an undescribed 1-2 species of virus in rhododendron. Buttercups, angelica, pokeweed, white snakeroot, Rudbeckia also tested positive for viruses. Two grape viruses were from genera previously unknown from grapes, as well as a virus known to infect cultivated grapes. Two of the blackberry viruses appear to be new to science and the third was just described in Oregon in 2007. Blackberry yellow vein-associated virus (BYVaV) was also detected in 2009. PI continues to search for viruses within plants showing virus-like symptoms. Samples are tested using double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) extraction followed by random-primed cDNA synthesis, cloning and sequencing because PCR technologies are unsuitable for highly variable viral genomes. Based on what is known from similar viruses, these plant viruses are moved from plant to plant by a variety of means: seed, aphids, leafhoppers/treehoppers, whiteflies.
