PI collected flies, especially big-headed flies (Pipunculidae), from the park for a study of the systemics, evolution, and biodiversity of this group. This group is primarily parasitoids of leafhoppers and planthoppers, as well as a few that are parasitoids of craneflies. PI indicated that 15 species were collected. The most significant discovery was of a previously described species called Dorylomorpha extricoides Albrecht. This species is apparently quite common at high elevations around Clingmans Dome. It has a very limited range and appears to be endemic to the park and nearby areas. See general information about the family on the web site in notes.
