PIs used seismic waves generated by quarry blasts to image the deep structure (depth range: 5-60 km) of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina and north Georgia. The work carried out in the Great Smoky National Park during the summer of 2004 was part of a larger project begun in 2002. The project was funded by the National Science Foundation. The recorders were deployed along Straight Fork Road at roughly 200-meter intervals. During July 2004, they monitored seismic waves generated by 6 blasts at quarries in Georgia and North Carolina. Preliminary results show an increase in crustal thickness from 38 km for the Carolina Terrane (and associated regional gravity high) to about 50 km along the foothills of the southeastern Blue Ridge (and associated regional gravity low), suggesting that the Blue Ridge Mountains are supported by a deep crust root.
