PI studied the daddy-long-legs Fumontana deprehendor, once thought to be one of the country's rarest opilionids, known only from two specimens collected at Greenbrier in the park and two collected in Joyce Kilmer. Collections of this species were made in the park at Elkmont, Cosby, and along US 129. Overall, their field efforts uncovered both more individuals (n = 141) and a broader distributional range (22 newly-discovered populations) for this monotypic genus. Rather than representing a single, hyper-rare taxon of limited distribution, this data suggest a broader distribution across the uplands of the southern Appalachians. Additional work published in 2008 discusses conservation units based on genetically distinct groupings across this species' range. The opilionid Bishopella laciniosa was also collected about the park but has yet to be published upon.
