The study was designed to produce a baseline inventory and population indices for long-term monitoring. Species with high densities in old growth are listed. In general, it was found that old growth sites show higher breeding bird densities than do second growth. From 1996 to 1999, the PI and his team established 4,159 point count sites throughout the park, mostly along trails and away from road and water noise. The repeated censusing 3,414 sites and made 74,797 bird detections of 115 species. Some species were only documented in specialized habitats, such as Cades Cove and Purchase Knob. These observations form the basis of most bird distribution knowledge of the park.
