Further studies of the lichens and lichenciolous fungi of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Lendemer J. 2016. Further studies of the lichens and lichenciolous fungi of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

At least 16 species and two genera of lichen new to science have been described based on material collected by co-PI under study # GRSM-00414 and -00825. At least 179 taxa new to GRSM have been identified, as well as several species new to science. At least 440 species of lichens and lichenicolous fungi were collected and identified. Some species appear to be endemic to places like Mt. LeConte or Anakeesta outcrops, such as the newly described Buellia sharpiana and Cladonia appalachensis, respectively. At least six new species have been described from park specimens. The park checklist was revised and annotated for rarity. Images and specimen records are available on-line at the NYBG Virtual Herbarium (www.nybg.org). GRSM, with greater than 739 species, now ranks as the #1 US National Park in terms of lichen diversity, greater than that recently reported for Klondike Goldrush National Historical Site. A book of the park's lichens was published in 2012, with a pictoral field guide in the works.
