"Initial results found none of 77 tested salamanders from streams in the Cades Cove area to be suspected positive for ranavirus. Additional samples and samples from more terrestrial salamanders are being tested. PI observed several hundred dead or dying larval ambystomatids on 19 and 22 May, 2009 at Gourley Pond. Dead amphibians were also noticed June 4th. Ranavirus was detected in spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer), upland chorus frogs (P. feriarum), wood frogs (Lithobates (Rana) sylvatica), marbled salamanders (Ambystoma oppacum), spotted salamanders (A. maculatum), and adult eastern red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus viridens). No ranavirus was found in amphibians in Gum Swamp or Methodist Church Pond."
