"This study will accomplish three scientific goals: 1) assess the evolutionary distinctiveness of the Southern Appalachian Black-capped chickadee, 2) provide a unique opportunity to examine movement of genes across a hybrid zone where one parental form surrounds the other and cuts it off from intraspecific gene flow, and 3) investigate the possibility that the elevational gap between chickadee species in the Great Smoky Mountains (around 3,500' elevation) contributes to lower levels of cross species gene flow than found in other areas of contact between these species. 30 black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) were capture, banded, bled, and released during 2009. DNA was extracted from all blood specimens. Analysis regarding the genetic differentiation and evolutionary relationships between Great Smoky Mountain black-capped chickadees, northern black-capped chickadees, and Carolina chickadees is ongoing."
