"PI is studying the distribution and hybridization of black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) and Carolina chickadees (P. carolinensis) in the park. His analysis of point counts conducted at 3,809 locations in the park between 1997 and 1999 of these two species (Shriner) has confirmed the existence of a previously identified detection gap which may point to an adaptive gap hybrids would have to overcome for extensive gene flow to occur. Further analysis of this record also reveals a tendency of one species to influence the distribution of the other, suggesting competition and selection for characters in this region may present circumstances exceptional to the Great Smoky Mountains and similar regions of contact along elevational gradients with respect to the phenomenon of hybridization observed between these two species elsewhere. Collection of blood samples for DNA analysis (limited) and processing of samples continued in 2010."
