"The objective of this study is to assess the impacts of the invasive, non-native earthworms Amynthas spp. by conducting a series of laboratory studies. As a first step, the PI will collect small numbers of live earthworms and millipedes to establish live cultures. Some experimentation will be required back in the lab to determine necessary appropriate food and habitat components (i.e., soil). In April 2011, approximately 200 millipede individuals were collected, primarily from Twin Creeks but also a few from other areas within the Park. A small quantity of leaf litter was collected to maintain the millipedes during transport. These were transported to the USDA Forest Service or Kansas State University. Laboratory cultures were established and we attempted to maintain these. Most cultures survived for 2 weeks to 9 months, depending on the species and the conditions. It does not appear that any were successful in reproducing. Some individuals are still alive and being maintained."
