Site and Stand Characteristics of Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Forests

Nicholas N. 2016. Site and Stand Characteristics of Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Forests. National Park Service

This study provided an overview of the state of the spruce-fir forests of the park in the early 1990s and 1995. By this time, balsam woolly adelgid had infested 99 percent of all live fir. There are very few large spruce seedlings compared to overstory density. Condition is addressed in more detail in publications, where park forests are compared to Mt. Rogers and Mt. Mitchell.
