PI identified, mapped, and measured course woody debris (standing snags >5cm dbh and downed trunks with one end diameter >10cm) in each of 50 plots (20m x 20m) in the Noland Divide Experimental Watershed, as well as assigning them to decay class. Samples from different decay classes for the dominant overstory species (Fraser fir, red spruce, yellow birch, and mountain-ash) were analyzed for nitrogen and carbon content. This provided an estimate of how much biomass and nitrogen in the watershed was contained in the coarse woody debris.
