Systematics of shadbushes (the genus Amelanchier, in the rose family or Rosaceae)

Campbell C. 2016. Systematics of shadbushes (the genus Amelanchier, in the rose family or Rosaceae). National Park Service

The southern Appalachians contain several species of shadbush (genus Amelanchier), including A. arborea, A. laevis, and A. sanguinea. A. sanguinea was not collected within the park, but specimens were collected of A. arborea, A. laevis, and A. spicata. The combination of hybridization, polyploidy, and apomixis has generated very complex taxonomies not only in Amelanchier, but also in blackberries (Rubus) and hawthorns (Crataegus) both members of the rose family(Rosaceae). The PIs hope to document their variation throughout much of their geographic range, to work out questions about their taxonomy, and to identify taxonomically informative characters. For more information about our study, visit their website (http://biology.umaine.edu/Amelanchier/). While attempting to assist them with collection of specimens, a possible new park species of shadbush was discovered in the southwestern portion of the park. The plants were sampled from the southwestern corner of the park, on a cliff overlooking Lake Chilhowee, and two of the plants were tetraploid and one was diploid.
