In August 2008 more than 400 cones were collected from four mountain tops (Purchase Knob, Mt LeConte, Clingmans Dome and Mt Buckley) and dissected for presence of cone insects. Only a small percent of cones were infested with insects, which were either Lepidoptera or Diptera. Identification of collected insects is ongoing and will be reported when completed. Additionally, while not part of the original project, a portion of the fir seeds will be screened using x ray photography to determine damage to seeds. Only three (3) moths emerged from rearing chambers: Paralobesia (formerly Endopiza) piceana Freeman. They were all from Purchase.
