Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus) and Veery (C. fuscescens) breeding habitat associations in Southern Appalachian high-elevation forests
Laughlin A. 2016. Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus) and Veery (C. fuscescens) breeding habitat associations in Southern Appalachian high-elevation forests
PI studied the breeding habitat associations of hermit thrush (Catharus guttatus), a recently arrived breeder to the park and region since the 1980s, and veery (C. fuscescens) in Southern Appalachian high-elevation forests. In general, hermit thrushes preferred territories with more canopy cover, more leaf litter on the ground, and a more open understory. Veeries, by contrast, preferred territories that had high shrub density between 0.0m and 3.0m above ground. Veeries forage and nest in this shrub layer, while hermit thrushes forage and nest on the ground, so these findings agree well with what is known of their foraging and nesting ecology.
