The Center for Remote Sensing and Mapping Science (CRMS), Department of Geography, University of Georgia was contracted to acquire high spatial resolution, leaf-off lidar (Light Detection And Ranging) data of the Tennessee portion of the park and adjacent Foothills Parkway. The acquisition of lidar for the Tennessee portion of the park will complete the lidar data set that currently exists for the North Carolina half of the park. Lidar data can be used to remotely measure canopy and sub-canopy height, detect potential wetlands, and has other uses. The field team collected data from 300 ground-truthing points in 2010 and 2011.
