Brook trout were restored to LeConte Creek, but the source populations for this restoration came from three different streams. The purpose of this study is to use both morphology and genetics to determine: (1) if brook trout from same stream stockings are assortively mating (choosing to mate within their group rather than mating randomly); (2) if pre-spawn sorting is a mechanism contributing to the positive assortive mating observed in LeConte Creek; and (3) quantify genetic similarity and develop benchmark genetics parameters to assist managers in restoration efforts. Whole fish, sacfry, and fin clips were collected from LeConte Creek, Cosby Creek, Indian Camp Creek, and Greenbrier Creek in 2011. Viable milt was collected from male trout from those creeks in 2012 and stored for use in 2013. PI had to switch graduate advisors (to John Carlson) and was still analyzing data in early spring 2016.
