Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), particularly estrogens and estrogen mimics, are discharged into water bodies from numerous sources (e.g., wastewater treatment facilities, agricultural runoff) and have been associated with deleterious effects on fish and wildlife around the globe. Specifically, EDCs have been associated with high incidence of fish intersex, defined as the presence of individuals with both male and female characteristics, and the expression of vitellogenin in male fish, a yolk precursor produced in the liver that is stimulated by estrogen (typically seen only in females). PI included a water sample from the Oconaluftee River in the park (lat. 35.544031 and long. -83.302719) as part of a North Carolina-wide study of EDCs in the state's waterways. After water samples have been processed, the PI will determine if additional sampling of water, sediments, and fish will be desired from the collection site in the park. It is assumed that the park site will not show EDCs, as there is no known source for them upstream. PI did not follow up on sampling in 2012.
