PI is studying techniques to 1) identify cryptic species and population structure (among and within river systems), 2) identify hybridization and movement of new genes through populations from one species to another, and 3) establish long term monitoring of effects of environmental change, setting the baseline to which future monitoring can be compared. He will work with three species of darter: greenfin, bluebreast, and redline darters (Nothonotus chlorobranchius, N. camurus, and N. rufilineatus) from several watersheds, collecting genetic material from pure and hybridized individuals. In 2012, he collected greenfin darters from the Oconaluftee River, Fighting Creek, and the West Prong of the East Fork Little Pigeon River, and redline darters from the latter two rivers. Analysis is expected to be completed by fall 2013.
