Ecologists are using ever-more-sophisticated tools to quantitatively analyze and model forest change with respect to ongoing climate change and other anthropogenic disturbances, and the results of these efforts are rapidly contributing to our understanding of vegetation dynamics and our ability to forecast (and potentially mitigate) future changes. However, these analyses, models, and future projections rely on historical data that is often lacking. The PI will be compiling and digitizing for the first time an important component of a uniquely comprehensive 1930s vegetation data set (Miller). The existence of such detailed, comprehensive data sets is rare, particularly for mountainous terrain such as the Smokies.
