The National Park Service is preparing a Natural Resource Condition Assessment for Amistad National Recreation Area. To inform this assessment, the authors evaluated the functional condition of the Pecos River and Devils River riparian systems within the park, but upstream of normal reservoir influence. We performed our assessments using the method described in “A User Guide to Assessing the Proper Functioning Condition and the Supporting Science for Lotic Areas” (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1998). Our results indicated that both the Pecos River and the Devils River riparian systems are in Proper Functioning Condition, the highest of the three possible ratings. The report includes assessments and recommendations for management of common reed (Phragmites australis) and tamarisk (Tamarix sp.) along the Pecos River.
