Abstract: "A one year study was made in the estuary of Redwood Creek to determine existing chemical water-quality conditions and nursery area available to out-migrating juvenile salmonids. Overall, the quantity and quality of salmonid habitat along the lower reach was considered severely degraded. The draining of an emayment to prevent flooding of pastureland decreased juvenile salmonid habitat by half and isolated two sloughs. Poor circulation and a high oxygen demand has caused one of the sloughs to become anoxic along the bottom. The other slough had good water quality conditions but remained isolated through most of the summer. restoration of the estuary would require increasing the circulation between the embayment and sloughs throughout the summer and removal of woody debris from the north slough. The flooding and draining of local pastureland places a heavy respiratory requirement of the estuary. Any restoration plan will have to prevent flooding while maintaining the estuary's highest possible water level."
