Archaeological Inventory and Assessment of the Kelly River, Noatak National Preserve.

From June 28 to July 10, 2016 a team of six NPS archaeologists conducted 12 days of survey along an approximately 15 km stretch of the Kelly River. The crew conducted pedestrian survey on landforms of high archaeological probability near to and away from the river and up both Napatorak and Wrench Creeks to acquire a representative sample of the distribution of sites in the upper valley. The crew spent approximately 840 hours in the field surveying approximately 160 hectares, hiked over 650 kilometers (combined), documented 36 new archaeological sites, and revisited 4 known archaeological sites. Sites were typically discrete lithic scatters found on exposed, well drained landforms like alluvial fans and low knolls. One site contained an Ipiutak period end blade, another yielded a biface likely associated with the Northern Archaic tradition, and features like cairns and stone caches were also observed during the survey. All 40 visited sites were determined to be in either good or fair condition, most with negligible effects of documented threats or disturbances.
