In January 2016, the National Park Service (NPS) entered into a contract with GWWO, Inc./Architects from Baltimore, Maryland to provide a Structural Condition Assessment Report for Fort Matanzas National Monument. Assisting the lead firm, the documentation and evaluation team included Faisant Associates structural engineers of Baltimore and Existing Conditions, Inc. of Boston, Massachusetts to perform a three-dimensional (3D) laser point cloud scan of the existing structure. This report identifies areas of structural instability and makes recommendations for their remediation. These recommendations are intended to help guide the park both in addressing issues requiring repairs in the near term and in planning for preservation of the structure over the long term. While the evaluation team did not observe any critical structural deficiencies requiring immediate remediation, some recommended treatments will require shorter term attention to avoid further deterioration. In particular, selective stone repair and repointing, remediation of an over-capacity second floor support beam, and reduction of water intrusion into the Fort are among the high priorities. At the end of the report is a complete prioritized list of work recommended for the next eight years as well as for items requiring ongoing maintenance.
