Between 1991 and 1997, the Maryland Geological Survey collected 32 sediment cores and 988 surficial sediment grab samples within Assawoman, Isle of Wight, Sinepuxent, Newport, and Chincoteague Bays as part of a multi-year investigation of the character of the shallow sediments of Maryland's Coastal Bays. The core and surficial sediments were analyzed for water content, textural properties, nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, and sulfur, and eight metals: Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. In addition to the sediment sampling, 33 km of high resolution seismic profile surveys were collected in Assawoman and Isle of Wight Bays to further define the shallow sediment column. An overview of the Coastal Bays Sediment Mapping Project as well as data and interpretation of the results are presented in two HTML-formatted documents contained on this CD. The Synthesis Report presents an interpretive overview of the results from the multi-year study. The data are presented visually in a series of interactive maps which are included in the Digital Atlas. Also, the data , as well as the Metadata, are available in ASCII text format in a series of text files in a directory labeled Data.
