This methods document (hereinafter referred to as standard operating procedure (SOP)) represents an effort to provide best practices and guidelines for on-the-ground high resolution elevation data collection in salt marshes through the use of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment. It is written for coastal parks in the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Island Network (NBCN) but may be applicable to other parks and other networks. Specifically these protocols were developed while conducting field work at Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS), Fire Island National Seashore (FIIS), and Gateway National Recreational Area (GATE). This procedure is meant to provide users with the knowledge and skills to perform elevation surveys in the field with GNSS equipment. It also acts as a standard to which data should be collected. The SOP is set up into three major sections; “before the field,” “in the field,” and “after the field.” These sections should guide the user through the complete survey process from start to finish. Understanding the basics of GNSS surveying is essential to collecting good quality data. Therefore it is the goal of this document to give the user insight into these topics in addition to providing workflows. A technical glossary is provided at the end of the document for common terms used throughout the report. The GNSS methods and procedures set forth in this SOP are based on the use of Trimble R10™ multi-frequency GNSS receivers, Trimble TSC3™ handheld controllers, Trimble Access™ Version 2014.12, and Trimble Business Center™ (TBC) Version 3.51. ArcGIS™ Version 10.2 and 10.3 were used for all geographic information system (GIS) related tasks. While GNSS and GIS equipment and software versioning may change in the future the basic principles and procedures should remain similar with ongoing software and firmware updates.
