These lesson plans were funded by a fiscal year 2015 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office (grant number P15AF00192) and a subgrant to the City of Lawrence, Kansas (project number KS-15-006). The subgrant provided for the City of Lawrence to hire a preservation consultant team to inventory the historic Oak Hill Cemetery and submit information to the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office for determination of National Register eligibility. The consultant team further utilized information gathered during the survey and National Register nomination research process to produce a curriculum for use in local schools based on resources in the cemetery. Curriculum used the National Park Service's Teaching with Historic Places project as guidance. The city intends to share this curriculum with other cities. Lawrence, Kansas is a Certified Local Government. The curriculum consists of three lesson plans: What Is a Rural Cemetery?; Symbolism in the Cemetery; and Civil War Veterans.
